A study says improving home insulation helps the economy more than drilling for new oil.

Level 1 · Easy

A new study looked at UK energy choices. It says fixing homes to keep them warm is better than drilling for new oil.

A plan called the warm homes plan could give jobs to 50,000 people. It could also save families one billion pounds every year on bills.

Drilling at the Rosebank oilfield would bring only about 1,100 jobs. Many people want the government to clean up homes instead of helping oil firms.

Level 2 · Medium

Insulating homes and fitting heat pumps would boost the UK economy more than drilling for new oil, according to a research group named E3G.

The government has a warm homes plan worth 15 billion pounds. E3G says this project could lower power costs by one billion pounds each year. It could also provide around 50,000 jobs across many small companies, helping low-income families the most.

In contrast, the Rosebank oilfield near Shetland would create only about 1,100 direct and indirect jobs. Oil companies like Equinor argue that drilling brings huge investment and tax money. However, other researchers say tax breaks for oil firms mean the country might actually lose 258 million pounds from Rosebank.

Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh said a choice on the Jackdaw gasfield is coming very soon, while a Rosebank decision will take more time. Many lawmakers, unions, and scientists want ministers to reject the oilfield.

Level 3 · Real news English

Making British houses warmer with insulation and heat pumps would create more employment and cut living expenses better than opening new oilfields, a study by E3G suggests.

Under the proposed 15 billion pound warm homes plan, up to five million properties would receive insulation. E3G estimates this work would lower yearly energy bills by one billion pounds, mostly benefiting poorer families. It would also add 1.6 billion pounds annually to the economy and generate about 50,000 jobs spread among thousands of smaller firms.

By comparison, developing the Rosebank oilfield west of Shetland would deliver only around 1,100 direct and indirect jobs, mainly tied to North Sea operations and two firms. Although backer Adura argues projects like Rosebank and Jackdaw will yield billions in tax and economic value, research by WWF and Uplift warns that generous tax reliefs could actually cause the government a 258 million pound loss over Rosebank’s lifespan.

Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh stated that an approval decision on the Jackdaw gas project was , while a verdict on Rosebank would take longer. While Labour pledged to stop new drilling permits in 2024, both projects were already part of the licensing pipeline.

Opposition to the oil project is growing. Ten major trade unions, scores of Labour MPs, and 600 scientists have urged ministers to turn down Rosebank, arguing that public funds should support clean heating rather than fossil fuels.
